Our Carbon Footprint Calculator

Discover your carbon footprint in less than five minutes!

With Project Neutral, you'll learn how many tonnes of climate pollution come from your household activity.

Climate change is the most pressing issue of our time and climate solutions are all around us. And while no one can do everything, everyone can do something! Through the energy we use in our homes, the fuel we use to move around, and the food, goods and services we buy, homes in Canada account for nearly 66 megatones of CO2e each year!

After measuring your carbon footprint, you can make a difference by:

Directly reducing your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through energy saving home improvements and active, healthy habits.

Sharing your low-carbon lifestyle with friends and neighbours. Believe it or not, telling others what you've done helps make low-carbon living the new normal!

Gathering with your community to support meaningful climate action from political and corporate leaders.

Use Project Neutral’s programs to engage your family, workplace, school, or greater community to measure their carbon footprints and also take climate action!

You can't manage what you don't measure.

Most of our daily choices come from behaviours we're hardly aware of: they're habits we developed gradually over time and don't think much about. We help you understand where your carbon "footprint" comes from. Does a long-distance flight have a bigger impact than heating your home? Measuring your climate impact with our carbon footprint quiz is your first step towards taking climate action!

So, how does it work?

Our carbon footprint calculator uses social benchmarking and personalized insights to motivate you to act on your climate impact. Getting started is easy! In five minutes or less you'll get a snapshot of your household climate impact by taking a short carbon footprint survey. We ask questions about your home energy, daily transportation, air travel, waste, and food choices.

Using your answers, we calculate an estimate of how much greenhouse gas (GHG) was emitted by each activity over the course of a year. The sum total of these GHG emissions is your carbon "footprint". You can learn more about how we measure your carbon footprint in our Frequently Asked Questions.

After completing our Getting Started survey, you can refine your results by completing our "deep dive" modules. In these modules you'll provide more details about your home energy, daily transportation, air travel, waste and food choices. We'll use those extra details to help calculate a more accurate measurement of your household's carbon footprint. Your dashboard will be updated every time you complete a new deep dive module and will provide you with a breakdown of your carbon footprint and what daily choices will have the greatest impact on climate change.
